Continuing from yesterday …
I’m trying to do something here between business, product and art. And I’ve been paralyzed for a long time thinking about what the end product should be.
Part of the paralysis is because of “art”—you finish the journey before you share the piece OR at least that’s how it’s been for me. At the end, you have enough perspective to articulate what it all means to you, to others, etc.
The other part of the paralysis is because of “business.” Business says what is the $$$$ value of what you are doing. If you cannot draw a straight line from product to dollar, then what is the point?
So I launched the 30 days of writing about the push-and-pull of creativity to just start. To do something. To begin an iterative experiment about if I care enough to write for 30 days about this topic and to see who in the big out there might care, too.
That is Product Land by the way. When you know absolutely nothing … When you are starting at minus zero, then do a small experiment to get more information. And when you have that information, then do another.
I made it 12 days before I got pulled into a project with a crazy timeline.
And yet I think it was very very successful.
Here’s why:
I got more comments and likes on these posts than I have on anything else.
A few people converted into subscribers, which was very, very nice.
I DID have something to write every morning
AND I enjoyed it
So where do we go from here?
There’s some transformation coming. I’ve already made some sections in this Substack and subscribed you to all of them. You can always manage what you receive in your accounts OR unsubscribe directly from the email section itself when you get it.
The sections are:
Notebook: Raw creative thinking. Zigzags across topics and formats. Very freeform. For people interested in the ride.
Product Wins for Everyone: Build impactful tech-enabled products through collaboration, culture, communication and creativity. For business leaders who need to make digital decisions.
The Cancer Journey: Thoughts from a cancer survivor, experience designer and creative writer on how to understand, improve, travel the journey. For patients, caregivers, medical providers, and myself.
Thinking about doing a monthly roundup in general.
That’s the creative and product split right now. To see if/how I write across those topics and what readers are interested in them. Also the business side is still very much just curious about if people will support me because they value the output
Let me know because if you—my audience are interested or have thoughts! Product world is very OK with a small cohort of people to engage with.
I’ve got some posts from the 30 days that I still need to share… I think that will bring us up to 15. And then I think the next experiment will actually be posting regularly on more of a cadence.
So here’s the plan:
Reset up Substack for sections above
Launch product/business/Bruce Wayne side newsletter
Get into a posting pattern here back to 1-2x weekly…. Or something
See if you all and I care!
THANKS!!!!!!!!
