Yesterday, I went to yoga, and after, I asked the teacher questions:
How do I activate my abs during class?
How do I work at this at home?
What can you do to help me during flow?
The teacher was super helpful. For awhile, she walked me through reverse plank when you lean against the wall as if you’re pretending to sit in a chair. It was HARD!
When I walked to the car in frustration and surrender, I thought: Well, that’s yoga practice for you.
Practice. That’s the key word! I’ve been doing yoga for almost 20 years. I don’t call it my yoga job, career, vocation, hobby, competition or performance. No matter what, it is always practice.
It’s always just the next link in the journey of whatever my yoga skill is. There is no end; it’s just continual always.
Then I thought: That’s creative practice, too. Often, we think of people creating to produce or finish a task or job. But often, creative work is just creative practice. You are moving the needle forward toward you exercising your skills.
Then I thought: That’s design practice too! The only difference is I often practice on the job. Design work is just taking out your skills and tools and practicing them on each project, moving the needle forward.
Then I thought: Maybe that’s how I should think of life? It’s just the daily practice of trying to be human. Wouldn’t that take the pressure off?
