So lonely
But with a twist!

There I am talking on the phone at your house about how lonely I am
And trying to be OK with it
“As you get older, people just don’t think about you.”
“They don’t think about you in the same way.”
—says the person over the phone who is several decades ahead of me in life.
And as we talk, there’s you! Over in the kitchen.
You place saran wrap over the cheese
dip you baked in a separate dish so I could take it home.
Then you go through your pantry and find …
peppers—
one red
one orange
one yellow—
and a peach!
And apple!
And let’s not forget about the cake,
which you baked …
just for me.
And as I’m talking over the phone, I watch all of this, a n d ….
I see the irony
which makes me laugh—
“Oh how lonely I am!”
