I was reading Tom and Lorenzo’s latest recap of the new Doctor Who, and they used a pretty word:
It occurs to us that nearly everything preceding this sentence must sound like utter nerd glossolalia to any non-Who fan of long standing …”
What is this word? I thought! For it is rare that I encounter words I do not know.
noun: glossolalia
the phenomenon of (apparently) speaking in an unknown language, especially in religious worship. It is practiced especially by Pentecostal and charismatic Christians.
Origin
late 19th century: from Greek glōssa ‘language, tongue’ + lalia ‘speech’.
Thus began a week in which I tried and challenged others to use it naturally in conversation. So far, my count is “2.”
So I challenge you!
My students look at me like I’m speaking glossolalia regularly! 😂🤣
